‘Vulnerable’ 18 million can’t vote

Voting rights and responsibilities are bound to grow in importance as the 2010 national and local elections loom on the horizon.The Commission on Human Rights, which dutifully looks after the welfare of peaceful citizens running from overzealous police officers, hired killers, onion-skinned politicians and subversive groups, has turned its attention to Filipinos who are qualified to vote but have been disfranchised by unfriendly forces, including the communist insurgency, Moro secessionism, imprisonment, physical disability, age and a death of information on their rights.

In a press statement, the CHR claimed about 15 million to 20 million “vulnerable” Filipinos are unable to vote, exacerbating fraud at election time, making possible the election of undeserving leaders and creating and perpetrating a wide base of politically uneducated citizens.
