Man apart

By Rome Jorge, Lifestyle Editor

A writer writing about a writer, a Filipino exploiting Filipino literary clichés, a scion of a storied political dynasty fictionalizing political absurdities too strange to be fiction—this is the story of how Miguel Syjuco’s Illustrado came to be and why it won this year’s grand prize at the prestigious Palanca Literary Awards.

The author distills the premise of his work: “The book is about this fellow Crispin Salvador who was an expat. He rose to fame by writing about the Marcos regime because it was interesting to the Americans. He then fell into obscurity—the flavor of the decade. And then he’s found dead on the Hudson River while he’s working on this book that was suppose to bring him back to fame—a very embittered book on the roots of power and wealth of many of Filipino elite families. His acolyte Miguel decides to journey back home to the Philippines to find out if it was murder. He goes in search of the subject in his book called The Burning Bridges.”
