LAST week, we were witness to another roller coaster ride in financial markets around the world, with the local bourse hitting fresh lows and the peso reeling from added pressure as risk aversion among investors intensified.

What triggered the week-long volatility was the confluence of three events: the bankruptcy filing of the US’ fourth biggest investment bank, the buyout of the brokerage firm that made Wall Street accessible to Main Street, and a turn for the worse at the world’s largest insurance firm.
