Why presidential debates matter

The first of three presidential debates between Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain scheduled on Friday night (US time) in Oxford, Mississippi, is expected to draw millions of viewers in America and the world as it defines further the US 2008 presidential election.

The debate helps illuminate the critical issues facing Americans and the global community. The exchange places the flagbearers of the Democratic and Republican parties on a single stage, on a one-to-one sparring, attacking each other’s policies as they defend their own. Captured on the TV screen, the mano-a-mano has the potential to male or unmake a candidate and his campaign.
