THE pattern of US government intervention in its financial markets
in a bid to save big-name private institutions from collapse has
placed the world’s freest economy in a quandary.
Over the past few months, Washington helped
bankroll the takeover, if not actually assumed the ownership of some
of the world’s financial behemoths, putting to shame even a rabid
nationalist like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.
