THE Department of Energy’s
admission of its impotence against erratic fuel price
adjustments proves a point we have been trying to hammer home
in this space: That a revision of the Downstream Oil Sector
Deregulation Law is in order.
Early this week, the energy
department said the law ties its hands to the bean-counter job of
monitoring oil price movements. Although it may check for possible
anti-competition practices, the agency has been at a loss building
up a case against oil retailers.
