Free hostages now–envoy

Police interrogate 23 ‘conspirators’

The US government sought the unconditional release of two foreigners held hostage by Islamic radicals in southern Philippines, demanding that the captives should gain their freedom immediately.

Kristie Kenney, Washington’s ambassador to the Philippines, on Friday said that while the release of Filipino hostage Mary Jean Lacaba late Thursday night was a welcome development, setting free and without strings attached Swiss Andreas Notter and Italian Eugenio Vagni should happen as soon as possible.
