RP boxers advance in King’s Cup

GERSON NIETES and Charly Suarez showed fellow Filipino that there is something to be proud of, when they debuted with aplomb in the 31st King’s Cup boxing tournament late Saturday at the swank Gwangwongwan Mall in Bangkok, Thailand.

The light flyweight Nietes of Negros Occidental rallied past Syrian Wardie Halder in the 54-kilogram class, while featherweight Suarez dominated Chantasone Xayyalak of Laos in the 57-kilogram division to both advance to the next round. Gerson is the nephew of World Boxing Organization light-minimumweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes.
