AMOUNT LESS THAN A FIFTH OF 2009 PROFIT

Meralco seeks add’l charge on customers

MANILA Electric Co. (Meralco) wants to charge its customers more to recover transmission fees it already paid the country’s power grid operator.In a petition filed before the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the country’s biggest electricity distributor proposed to get back the transmission under-recoveries of about P0.03 per kilowatt-hour starting this month’s billing period.

This translates to roughly a total of P2.59 billion, including interest over a three-year period. This amount is equivalent to less than a fifth of Meralco’s anticipated profit for this year alone under its new performance-based rate-setting scheme.
