The art broker

Being a broker for about 30 years, Didi Dee understands the importance of an artist’s name. But even as she admits that her business has changed her in so many ways, some of the beliefs that she held during her younger years still remain intact. As a mediator between creators and collectors, she still feels that it is not her job to sell names; her mandate is to market talent, to give focus to effort and to dispel the long withstanding notion that all it takes for a piece to be an opus is the signature of a master.

“I’ve always been against the way some brokers and galleries operate with ‘name-centric philosophies,’” Dee told The Manila Times. “There are a lot of works in the market right now that only have value because of the name of the artist. Ever since I got into this business, I felt that a lot of people put so much importance on such a thing so I went toward the opposite direction.”
