First-half farm sector growth slows sharply


PHILIPPINE farm output growth fell sharply in the first half of this year despite state efforts to boost crop production and a recovery in the disease-ravaged livestock sector, the government said Friday.

The Department of Agriculture reported that the agriculture sector, which accounted for about a fifth of the country’s economy, grew 1.53 percent at end-June, or way below the 4.7 percent expansion in the same period last year.
