Shouldering the load together
|
|
That’s what “Balikatan” means. And through this editorial we in
The Times wish to help lighten a bit the added load on our military
and their American counterpart in the Balikatan. They are being made
to bear this added load by misguided but honest critics of the
Balikatan as well as by propagandists of the pro-New People’s Army
political Left. These forces are doing what they can to undermine
the next Balikatan exercises scheduled to be held in April in the
Bicol provinces.
They have been bombarding the media with
invectives against a good RP-US partnership program, which
admittedly has had some dark moments. In the final analysis,
however, the negatives in the history of the Balikatan—the most
infamous of which is the rape of “Nicole” by American Lance
Corporal Daniel Smith–have not overwhelmed its overall goodness as
an annual collaborative Philippine-American activity that greatly
benefits the Philippines and the Filipino people.

Writing UP’s
history
|
|
It is said that history is written by (or for) the victors or those
in power. In the Philippines the Tadhana project is an example of
how UP historians were commissioned to write a series of the
nation’s chronicles in the name of President Ferdinand Marcos.

Mental dishonesty at
the Senate
|
|
Senators always have harsh words for resource persons or witnesses
whom they perceived to be giving false testimony. Now, I dare them
to move against Sen. Jamby Madrigal who continues to assert that she
said something on the floor even when presented with proof that she
never did.

Subordination and word
order in English - I
|
|
We all know that in English, the main clause of a sentence is
generally more important than a subordinate clause or phrase, but
many of you must have wondered which position is most appropriate
for a subordinate clause or phrase—up front, at the tail end, or
elsewhere in the sentence?

Why the local auto
industry is resilient
|
|
The sharp global downturn in the automotive industry has not yet hit
the Philippine automotive sector. Local auto leaders see sales at
the same level as last year’s at worst and are even projecting a
slight four percent growth this year.

Hamas-Fatah unity remote, dims
Israeli-Palestinian peace prospects
|
|
JERUSALEM: Despite the recent debilitating confrontation with the
Israeli army in the Gaza Strip, Hamas is no more likely to seek
reconciliation with its secular counterpart Fatah, leaving the
Palestinian nation divided and any chance for Israeli-Palestinian
peace negotiations unsettled.
