COTABATO CITY: The celebration of the “Amun Jadid” or the Muslim
New Year in the Hijrah calendar on December 29 and the New Year as
celebrated today as based on the Gregorian calendar, is considered
by both Muslim and Christian religious leaders especially here in
Mindanao as indicating “a good omen” for the year 2009 being
just two days apart or coincidentally close to each other.
Prof. Taha Basman, president of the Center for
Moderate Muslims that has a provincial chapter based in this city,
said it would take some 11 years again before the Amun Jadid and the
New Year’s Day would come this close since the Islamic Hijrah
calendar is based on lunar cycles, where days in every month are
counted always more than a week ahead of their inclusive periods.
