The charm of the spoken word

Audiobooks offer a different delight for book lovers

By simple definition, an audiobook is a recording of a spoken word (as opposed to music) on a medium such as a CD or a cassette tape. While most audiobooks are versions of printed novels or articles in circulation, this is not the sole characteristic that makes an audiobook an audiobook. Some materials, like instructional modules do not have a print counterpart and are reproduced solely on this format.

The genesis of audiobooks can be traced in 1931 when the United States Congress launched the program dubbed Books for the Adult Blind Project. The mission of the endeavor is to develop talking-books to help blind adults who can’t read print.
