GAZA CITY: Israeli tanks lunged deepest yet into Gaza’s cities,
sparking ferocious battles with Hamas on Thursday even as hopes rose
for a truce to end the war that has killed more than 1,000
Palestinians.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon arrived in Tel Aviv and
Israel sent senior envoys to Egypt and the United States amid a
diplomatic push to end the 20-day old war launched to stop Hamas
rocket fire, in which an estimated 600 civilians have died.
MOSCOW: Russia and Ukraine on Thursday remained deadlocked in their
energy war with European governments becoming increasing angry and
exasperated over the dispute.
WASHINGTON, D.C.: The United States may never be able to prosecute
an alleged plotter of the September 11, 2001, attacks because he was
tortured, a top Pentagon official said in an interview published
Wednesday.
CARACAS, Venezuela : The National Assembly Wednesday overwhelmingly
approved President Hugo Chavez’s proposed constitutional amendment
to allow for unlimited re-election of the president and all other
elected officials.
