Most Filipinos like America—some really do love it. That is why in survey after survey the USA is the most favorite destination for Filipinos who want to find jobs abroad. Asked which other country they would have liked to be citizens of, most Filipinos respond “the United States.”

But the America in our minds is, yes, the land of wealth, of superior economic and industrial achievement, the glitter of Hollywood movies and TV box-office hits. But it is also more than that. Above all, the America of the Filipino is that dreamt-of-country that we wish the Philippines would be.
