Drug lords in high places

Narco-politics threat to national security

  
Illegal drug gangs have penetrated Philippine politics “from the municipal to the national level,” an official said, adding that the narcotics problem was so grave that it had become a threat to national security.

The warning, which put the drug trade at $6.4 billion to $8.4 billion a year, comes more than a year before national elections in May 2010 and days after President Gloria Arroyo named herself as anti-drug czar.
