Emerging culture of respect
for human dignity

Not only did the first official acts of President Barack Hussein Obama signal an intention to shift the White House’s foreign relations perspective, they also indicate the long-wished-for emergence of a policy to foster “the culture of respect for human dignity.”

He signed on Thursday three historic executive orders. They will close the Guantanamo Bay detention centers, shut down all CIA prisons and ban the use of torture. The “Gitmo” order also includes the US commander-in-chief’s request for a halt to hearings of inmates by military tribunals. These tribunals’ hearings have been exposed as a mockery of American standards of justice, due process and the rule of law. Following procedures, it would take about a year for the Gitmo prison camps to be effectively abolished.
