THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) study includes the Philippines
among the eight countries in Asia that are facing an aging crisis.
In these countries the pension system is weak and inadequate, the
study says. What makes the situation worse is that modernization and
lifestyle changes have also shrunk the Asians’ formerly solid
family-based support system.
There has been a “seismic demographic
shift,” says ADB’s senior economist Park Donghyun. Asian females
are better educated and more conscious of their rights, including
the right to enjoy life. They get better medical care. Asians are
imitating their American and European social models and are having
fewer children. They enjoy life indeed and live longer.
