Philippine herbal medicine pioneer Nelia Maramba, MD |
|
By Rome Jorge, Lifestyle
Editor
At stake are millions worth in
profits for pharmaceutical conglomerates, the livelihood of
thousands of farmers, the meager budgets of millions of families,
the health of an entire nation and the birthright of a people to
their own indigenous fauna. Once derided as superstitious cures of
folk medicine men known as herbolarios, herbal medicines have been
the focus of scientific study for the past few decades. Now those
studies have begun to bear fruit—practical medicines that compete
at half the price with established brands.
Much is at stake. Already, a
price has been named for it. Foreign entities have made overtures to
purchase the patent for the genetic material of local species from
which local herbal medicines are derived. We know it and they know
it. The Philippines is on to something valuable.
