Tradition kills

Age-old Chinese cures needlessly contribute to extinction of wildlife

With all the accolades attributed to it, there is a dark side to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The production of a number of medicines used in TCM contributed greatly to the extinction of a number of species among them are tigers, rhinoceros, moon bears and sea horses.

Doctors of TCM for centuries used tiger bones for the treatment of joint maladies like arthritis while rhino horns were believed to cure fever, delirium and convulsions. Bears are now farmed in China so their bile could be extracted. Practitioners of TCM put a high value on bear bile as cure for bacterial infections and inflammation. Seahorses, meanwhile, were used for the treatment of impotence, urinary incontinence, wheezing and old age debilitation.
