Weighty woes

Obesity as a serious medical condition

A 1998 report of the Department of Health (DoH) states that there is a 3.3 percent prevalence of obesity among Filipinos 20- to 60-year-old. The report also says that those aging 40 to 59 years are the most at risk of being obese. Another interesting fact about the DoH study is that female adults have a higher obesity prevalence rate than male adults.

Dr. Jeffrey Passer, a medical expert based in Omaha, Nebraska cites the traditional definition of obesity, “Obesity is used to be understood in fairly simple terms as excess body weight resulting from eating too much and exercising too little, due in large part to a lack of willpower or self-restraint.” Passer adds that modern research had indicated that there is a deeper reason. He points out that this medical condition maybe, is a result of a complex interaction of genetics, behavior, and environmental factors, which causes imbalances between energy intake of a person and his energy expenditure.
