Obesity as a serious medical condition
|
|
By Joy Festin, Contributor
A 1998 report of the Department of Health (DoH)
states that there is a 3.3 percent prevalence of obesity among
Filipinos 20- to 60-year-old. The report also says that those aging
40 to 59 years are the most at risk of being obese. Another
interesting fact about the DoH study is that female adults have a
higher obesity prevalence rate than male adults.
Dr. Jeffrey Passer, a medical expert based in
Omaha, Nebraska cites the traditional definition of obesity,
“Obesity is used to be understood in fairly simple terms as excess
body weight resulting from eating too much and exercising too
little, due in large part to a lack of willpower or
self-restraint.” Passer adds that modern research had indicated
that there is a deeper reason. He points out that this medical
condition maybe, is a result of a complex interaction of genetics,
behavior, and environmental factors, which causes imbalances between
energy intake of a person and his energy expenditure.

during the rainy season, ultraviolet rays can still cause burning
and premature aging on the skin.
