A center of excellence and model for others—like Rizal

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), the first Philippine institution of higher learning to have a
Filipino name and the first to be funded solely by a municipal government, deserves its reputation as center of excellence and as the home of several centers of excellence.

Something more than nationalist fervor is behind the Filipino name. The university authorities point to the Tagalog term pantas—from which pamantasan is derived—which connotes wisdom. They proclaim the PLM’s principal goal to be the achievement of wisdom, the capacity for total understanding, not merely the accumulation of knowledge and professional expertise. In short, what PLM seeks to offer to society are graduates who are both excellent professionals in their fields and disciplines and men of wisdom—pantas.
