2nd-quarter growth ‘better’ –NEDA

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) on Monday said Philippine economic growth would be “better” in the second quarter due to higher government spending and remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Rolando Tungpalan, NEDA deputy director general, told reporters that “things are looking better now. I can’t imagine that the second quarter will be worse [than the first quarter].”

In the first quarter, the economy as measured by the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by only 0.4 percent, sharply lower than the 3.9-percent expansion in the same period last year.
