Islamic militant leaders 
detained in Manila–military


Troops have detained two suspected Islamic militant leaders in the southern Philippines, the military said Wednesday.The Army revealed the separate arrests of Abu Sayyaf suspect Mubin Sakandal and alleged Jemaah Islamiah liaison Ansar Bernardino Venancio after they were flown to Manila, where they underwent medical tests at a military hospital Wed­nesday before being remanded to unspecified jails.

Military spokesmen said the 48-year-old Sakandal, better known by his alias Mobin Abdurajak, was a founding member of the Abu Sayyaf who allegedly took part in kidnappings of American and European tourists, a French journalist and local schoolchildren in the south in 2000 and 2001.
