Troops have detained two suspected Islamic militant
leaders in the southern Philippines, the military said Wednesday. The
Army revealed the separate arrests of Abu Sayyaf suspect Mubin
Sakandal and alleged Jemaah Islamiah liaison Ansar Bernardino
Venancio after they were flown to Manila, where they underwent
medical tests at a military hospital Wednesday before being
remanded to unspecified jails.
Military spokesmen said the
48-year-old Sakandal, better known by his alias Mobin Abdurajak, was
a founding member of the Abu Sayyaf who allegedly took part in
kidnappings of American and European tourists, a French journalist
and local schoolchildren in the south in 2000 and 2001.
