Heroes and Victors

The town of Baler in the province of Aurora in the northeastern part of Luzon is recorded in history as the birthplace of a former Philippine president—Manuel L. Quezon. But that is not all the town is known for. Baler is also the site of a historic siege that ended not only peacefully, but also with the main players—and eventually their governments—shaking their hands in friendship.

It happened in the years 1898 and 1899, toward the end of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish rule and the onset of the coming of the Americans to the country who had decided to take the Spanish-American war to Philippine shores and, as history would tell us, to become the next rulers in the country.
