In a country with a long history of unsolved crimes, talk about
reopening an unexplained murder or disappearance only invites a
smirk or a shrug. This is particularly true in the case of former
Sen. Benigno Aquino, assassinated on August 21, 1983, at the Manila
International Airport (MIA), along with Rolando Galman, said to be
the communist hitman, who killed the senator.
President Gloria Arroyo pardoned last week 10
former soldiers convicted for the assassination. All had pleaded
innocence, had fingered Guzman as the killer, but had little idea
who the mastermind was. The clemency should have closed the book,
but Malacañang is supposedly keen on reopening the files. What for?
