The ongoing conflict between the government forces and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front and the security issues that come with it
are not enough to stop two Filipinos—Zalave Dinas and Roy
Pamitalan—from doing volunteer work in Mindanao, the United
Nations Office in the Philippines reported over the weekend.
Since May 2008, Dinas, a United Nations
Volunteers (UNV) Water and Sanitation Officer assigned to United
Nations Children’s Fund in Cotabato, has helped nearly 30,000
displaced families living in evacuation camps. She provides
technical advice, guidance and support to make sure their basic
needs are met, most especially the need for safe water.
