Malacañang kills book-import tax

We always had faith that the taxes on book imports would be lifted either by Finance Secretary Gary Teves or President Gloria Arroyo herself. Our faith was borne out when Press Secretary Cerge Remonde told us yesterday morning that late at night on Sunday the President had given the order to Finance to scrap the taxes imposed on imported books and reading materials.

Secretary Teves, who we had earlier learned was examining the new imposition, said he would immediately comply with the President’s directive. As a result Mr. Teves is revoking Finance Department Order 17-09.
