Risking our future

BECAUSE our policymakers pander to the indignation and outrage surrounding the Kho-Halili-et. al. sex video scandal, they may appear to some to be ignoring a bigger threat to society—the A (H1N1), or swine flu virus, which has already infected two Filipinos and possibly eight more.

The fact is that the government deserves the praise the World Health Organization has recently given it for taking decisive steps to prevent A (H1N1) from landing here. For the President, Department of Education, Department of Labor and other government agencies—in addition to the Department of Health—have actively campaigned for public awareness of the dangers of A (H1N1) and of the need to take essential precautions—like washing hands thoroughly with soap, wearing face masks if necessary and avoiding crowded places.
