Risking our future
|
|
BECAUSE our policymakers pander to the indignation and outrage
surrounding the Kho-Halili-et. al. sex video scandal, they may
appear to some to be ignoring a bigger threat to society—the A
(H1N1), or swine flu virus, which has already infected two Filipinos
and possibly eight more.
The fact is that the government deserves the
praise the World Health Organization has recently given it for
taking decisive steps to prevent A (H1N1) from landing here. For the
President, Department of Education, Department of Labor and other
government agencies—in addition to the Department of Health—have
actively campaigned for public awareness of the dangers of A (H1N1)
and of the need to take essential precautions—like washing hands
thoroughly with soap, wearing face masks if necessary and avoiding
crowded places.

Downscaling our
leadership benchmarks
|
|
Even in this age of diminishing expectations and a low, low bar for
higher leadership, we don’t expect our next president to be
clueless. We can settle for less than a brainiac. But a president
who is not a problem-solver is entirely and utterly unacceptable.
