August angst and aws |
|
In August, the major national activity was politics, and the
principal page-one news was the 2010 election and the events leading
to it. The passing away of the beloved President Cory Aquino
shrouded the country in grief, but even her death spawned political
surprises, principally the unexpected candidacy of Sen. “Noynoy”
Aquino, heretofore a bystander in next year’s presidential race.
The political opposition remained divided,
thanks to overweening ambitions. President Erap Estrada insisted on
running but quit the Makati “Unity Week” minutes after the photo
op.
