Remove bank-secrecy protection for officials

TWO years and about half-a-month ago, Sen. Francis Escudero filed Senate Bill 1476. If that bill had become a law, especially after Senator Escudero had added amendments making the proposed law stronger and wider in scope, many corrupt public officials would have been found out, arrested, charged and most likely convicted.

With this law, government employees and officials would no longer be able to hide—as they easily do now—“behind the cloak of bank secrecy laws to protect their ill-gotten wealth,” the senator said when pushing for swift passage of his bill on Friday.
