Lost youth on canvas |

When I saw Eli Avellanoza’s painting and digital renditions of
traditional Filipino games on his website several months back, I
recognized myself in them at once. Between the playful colors and
over and beneath his fluid strokes, I could see fragments of my
childhood and hear the laughter of my youth.
I did not even have to look at the paintings’
titles. I knew them by heart. Sungka, luksong tinik, luksong baka,
patintero, siatong, sipa—I played them all as a young child.

Tapuey, more commonly known as the rice wine, is abundant in the
northern parts of the Philippines. But at present, tapuey making in
the Cordillera community took a backseat despite the demand for
it—with only a few Cordillera natives left to teach the younger
generations.

Harper receives
French Order of Arts and Letters
|

The French Republic through its Philippine Embassy recently awarded
Intramuros Administration head Anna Maria “Bambi” Harper with
the Order of Arts and Letters for her outstanding contributions to
the promotion of Franco-Philippine relations.
