Nietes, Gorres score wins; Mayol loses bid

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and Z “the Dream” Gorres scored wins over separate opponents on Saturday in different venues, while compatriot Rodel Mayol failed on his fourth bid to win a world title.

Nietes won via split decision to keep up his World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimum­weight crown against Mexican challenger Manuel “Chango” Vargas, while Gorres whipped Cruz Carvajal in a non-championship bantamweight bout at the Tepic, Nayarit in Mexico.
