MOVIE REVIEW

The Execution of Brillante Mendoza

By Iskho F. Lopez, Subeditor

Film director Brillante Mendoza made history as the first Filipino to bag the rather elusive recognition that Cannes offers the worldwide film industry. Interestingly, the movie Kinatay follows after Lino Brocka’s Bayan Ko: Kapit Sa Patalim (1984), which also earned a nomination for Cannes’ Golden Palm, in more ways than one; both films were not shown commercially in the Philippines, both for political reasons.

Kinatay (butchered) also went by the English title The Execution of P in translation, which refers to the lead character Peping (Coco Martin). The word “execution” virtually telegrams the shocking experience Peping goes through in this one gruesome day in his life. He gets butchered by the experience of witnessing corrupt men in uniform commit a criminal act so matter-of-factly. In the movie, it’s the prostitute Madonna (Isabel Lopez) who is brutally hacked into pieces with viewers left to imagine.
