Dark brilliance |
|
Cannes Film Festival best director award-winner
Brillante Mendoza
|
|
By Rome Jorge
To know Brillante Mendoza, one must understand
what he is not. And by doing so, one reveals not only the director
but also the industry and the society he both lives with and strives
to be apart from.
He is not an entertainer. Mendoza is not out to
please the eyes with pretty scenes or satiate hearts with feel-good
fantasies. He does not offer eye candy, popcorn fare or even a value
meal. What he dishes is raw, unappetizing truth—a bitter pill to
some, soul food to others and an acquired taste regardless. With the
silver screen as his canvas, he avoids the decorative and instead
paints with dark colors the indelible images with which to tattoo
the conscience. “I’m a social realist,” he admits.

THE
SCRIBE VIBE
By Libay Linsangan Cantor
|
|
When your
writing comes to life on screen
|
|
Scriptwriters must already be used to seeing their works on screen,
whether they write for television or film, especially the veterans
who have been writing for a long time. Of course this is applicable
to those writers whose works actually made it to production. But
then again, that’s another discourse altogether.
