Dark brilliance

Cannes Film Festival best director award-winner Brillante Mendoza

To know Brillante Mendoza, one must understand what he is not. And by doing so, one reveals not only the director but also the industry and the society he both lives with and strives to be apart from.

He is not an entertainer. Mendoza is not out to please the eyes with pretty scenes or satiate hearts with feel-good fantasies. He does not offer eye candy, popcorn fare or even a value meal. What he dishes is raw, unappetizing truth—a bitter pill to some, soul food to others and an acquired taste regardless. With the silver screen as his canvas, he avoids the decorative and instead paints with dark colors the indelible images with which to tattoo the conscience. “I’m a social realist,” he admits.
