NAVOTAS parents are assured their children will only get healthy food from school canteens with the implementation of Department of Education Order 13 that details Policy and Guidelines on Healthy Food and Beverages in Schools. Mayor John Rey Tiangco expressed support to the policy, saying it helps secure the health of young Navoteños (Navotas residents). “It has been our goal to require schools to prepare only healthy food for our students. We are grateful that DepEd shares and supports our advocacy,” Tiangco said. Under the mayor’s directive, Avot John, official mascot of Navotas, visited all public elementary schools to promote healthy lifestyle to students. Based on studies, 79.7 percent of Filipino children nationwide aged 5-10 are malnourished, prompting the intensified campaign for the provision of balanced and healthy food in schools. According to the DepEd order, school canteens will limit their preparation of foods high in fat and sugar, and ensure that students are provided with a complete mix of go, grow and glow foods.
