A devotee of the Black Nazarene died after collapsing during the procession on Friday.
Renato Guryon, 44, a member of the Hijos del Nazareno– a religious group responsible for securing the “andas” and the religious icon– reportedly suffocated to death when his chest got caught on the stainless railings of the “andas”.
Reports said, Guryon suffocated when the crowd at the Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park, Manila started shoving each other in a bid to get nearer to the “andas.”
His companions rushed him to the Manila Doctor’s Hospital but Guryon was declared dead on arrival. Initial findings showed that he died of heart attack.
As of 5 a.m., the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority placed crowd estimate at 5.5 million.
