NBI probes Sablayan drug lord


The Sablayan Penal Colony in Mindoro Occidental is under investigation after a Filipino-Chinese drug lord was able to get out and transact illegal drugs outside of the facility and in connivance with officials of the Bureu of Corrections. National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Virgilio Mendez on Tuesday assured the public that Ruben Tiu will no longer be allowed to leave the jail facility. On April 17, Tiu, escorted by Sablayan prison guards, was able to get out of the facility to sell one kilo of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu to a buyer, who turned out to be an NBI agent. Mendez said his probers are still tracing as to who among the officials of Sablayan Penal Colony gave the permission to Tiu to leave the facility temporarily.
