This time, it’s the jail guards who got caught.
The seventh shakedown at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City found several jail guards in possession of prohibited items such as improvised deadly weapons, suspected illegal drugs, and pornographic materials.
There were also signal boosters, playing cards, three fighting roosters, machetes and a sachet of marijuana found at the Inmate Custodial Aide area.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Ricardo Rainier Cruz 3rd said they included the patrol office in the inspection after receiving a tip that some inmates use the facility to hide their contraband.
Cruz said the seizure of the banned items is proof of the connivance between inmates and jail guards. He said six jail guards will undergo investigation. Although he did not identify them, Cruz said the officers were assigned to man buildings 1 and 2, Security Patrol
Unit-Inmate Custodial Aide, Reception and Diagnostic Center and Prison Inmate Labor Contract Officer (Pilco) Shop.
Meanwhile, in buildings 1 and 2 of the medium security camp, authorities seized communication equipment, gaming gadgets, appliances, P18,000 cash and at least 30 paddles, which officials said were used in the initiation rites of new members.
The surprise shakedown came a day after another inmate was stabbed to death in the maximum security compound.
Felicito Braga was pronounced dead on arrival at the NBP Hospital. The suspect was another inmate and the victim’s cousin, Jonathan Braga.
Authorities are investigating the motive of killing.
This was the fourth stabbing inside the maximum security compound in the fourth quarter of this year.
