Host Jose Rizal University (JRU) promised high-level competition in the 90th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) set to unfold on June 28.
JRU President Dr. Vincent Fabella formally accepted the symbolic flag from the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) in turnover ceremonies on Thursday.
“Our theme for the 90th season is “Heroes Today, Tomorrow’s legend: NCAA @90; Making History,” said Fabella in the rites attended by members of the NCAA policy board and management committee at the CSB Hotel.
In the coming season, NCAA fans are awaiting the San Beda College Red Lions’ quest for five straight seniors basketball crown, which when accomplished will match the San Sebastian College Stags feat in the 1990’s.
“The NCAA will continue to lead the way as the oldest organized sports league in the country. This year’s theme is acknowledgement to the past while moving forward and setting the pace to a new ground,” said Fabella, who will also assume post as incoming policy board chairman replacing CSB president Fr. Dennis Magbanua.
Former San Sebastian Stags and University of Perpetual Help Altas head coach Arturo Cristobal will be the new commissioner of the basketball tournament, according to Fabella.
Magbanua also said that the policy board unanimously approved the granting of another year of probationary status to Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College, which joined the league as guest teams in 2010-2011 season.
