Arellano University snapped Emilio Aguinaldo College’s
three-game winning streak with a pulsating 71-70 win Saturday
in NCAA men’s basketball Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.
John Pinto starred in the Chiefs’ win by scoring the game
clincher that spoiled the Generals quest for a Final Four slot and
avenged a 63-79 setback to the Generals in the first round of the
elimination last Aug. 17.
The 23-year-old Pinto, a Bachelor in Business Administration freshman,
coolly sank a jumper that moved Arellano on top again, 71-69 with less
than a minute remaining.
John Tayongtong’s triple seconds earlier nailed the last and third deadlock, 69-69, for the Generals. Tayongtong could have tied the game but could only convert two of free throws.
The Chiefs scored their sixth victory against nine losses.
The Generals dropped to 8-8 and need to sweep their remaining two games to keep their hope for a Final Four alive.
They are also hoping that rival San Sebastian College, which has an 8-6 card, lose all its four remaining games.
Pinto led the Chiefs with 18 points, 8 rebounds and nine assists.
Jan Jamon paced the Generals with 21 points, Cedric Noube Happi had 17 and Jack Arquero 11.
