Jose Rizal University thwarted Emilio Aguinaldo College’s last-ditch stand to fashion out with an 85-79 win and notch their third win Monday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
Philip Paniamogan and Marco Balagtas played strong down the stretch to lead the Heavy Bombers to their third victory in five matches while handing the Generals their fourth setback in five games.
With the win, Jose Rizal moved to the fourth spot behind solo
leader Letran (3-0), University of Perpetual Help Altas (3-1) and
defending titlist San Beda Red Lions (3-1).
The Lyceum Pirates, San Sebastian Stags and Arellano Chiefs are just half a game behind the Bombers with similar 2-2 cards.
Bombers coach Vergel Meneses praised the Generals’ tenacity as they tied the game several times and threatened, 49-52,
early in the second period.
But Paniamogan, Balagtas, John Pontejos and Michael Mabulac, helped the Bombers keep the Generals at bay, Meneses said.
Paniamogan finished with a game-high 23 points, Mabulac 6, Balagtas 14 and Pontejos, 12.
Noube Happi led the Generals with 20 points, Jack Arquero contributed 14, Elyzar Paguia 12 and John Tayongtong, 10.
