Shane Ko and Cameroonian Aziz Issah Mbomiko combined for 25 points to lift Lyceum of the Philippines past Jose Rizal University, 73-72, Saturday in NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Pirates’ victory, their sixth in 16 matches, ended the Heavy Bombers’ quest for a Final Four slot.
Even if Jose Rizal sweeps its two remaining matches it will end up with 8 wins, not enough to dislodge fourth front running San Sebastian College, which has a 9-6 card.
That leaves only Emilio Aguinaldo College (8-8), Arellano University (6-9) and San Sebastian (9-6) to contest the last Final Four berth.
The Pirates and the Bombers are tied in seventh to 8th spot with identical 6-10 cards.
Lyceum jumped to an early 20-12 lead, which it held on to until the half, 39-31.
Ko topscored for the Pirates with 13 points, while Mbomiko shot 12.
It was a sorry loss for Jose Rizal, who had at least four players scoring in double digits: Michael Mabulac shot 17 points, Schever Benavides 16, Philip Paniamogan 14 and Nick Abanto 10.
