NCR gymnasts shine in Palaro opener

Davao del Norte: John Ivan Cruz bagged two gold medals powering the National Capital Region’s (NCR) dominance of the first day of gymnastics competition of the 2015 Palarong Pambansa at the Panabo Multi-Purpose Cultural Tourism and Sports Center here on Monday. Perennial champion NCR won all six gold medals in the first day of the event.

Cruz, 13, ruled the male artistic gymnastic individual all-around event with 36.35 points. Finishing second and third respectively were Patrick Poquiz with 34.5 points and John Cris Amagos of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City (SOCCSKSARGEN) Regional Athletic Association with 32.5 points.

Cruz, a third-year high school student of Araullo High School Manila then captured his second gold medal alongside John Matthew Vergara and Poquiz after topping the team championship of men’s artistic gymnastics with 102.85 score.

“I trained so hard to be on top of the Palarong Pambansa,” Cruz, who already collected 11 gold medals since joining the Palarong Pambansa in 2013, told The Manila Times in an interview. “I really like to represent the Philippines in the Olympics in the future.”

SOCCSKSARGEN also known as Region 12 finished second with 96.1 while Southern Tagalog finished third with 91.15 points.

The NCR also won the gold medal in the elementary women’s artistic gymnastics individual all-around event after 12-year-old Isabella Sta. Maria posted 52.60 points.

Jazmine Jane Velasquez finished second with 52.00 and Eunie Soronio of Central Visayas third with 51.35 points.

NCR claimed its fourth gold medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics team event by posting 104.6 while SOCCSKSARGEN with 99.55 points and Southern Tagalog with 96.45 points finished second and third respectively.

In the elementary male artistic gymnastics all-around individual class, NCR bet John Romeo Santillan posted 34.2 points to cop the gold while Aldrin Apuyan with 33.65 and John Paul Cabido of SOCCSKSARGEN with 33.1 finished second and third respectively.

NCR, bannered by Santillan and Apuyuan, earned its sixth gold in the men’s artistic gymnastics elementary team class by posting 67.85 followed by SOCCSKSARGEN with 65.4 and Central Visayas with 62.8.

Over at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan located along the Capitol Circumferential Road in Tagum City, Adamson U’s Daryl Unix Samantila led the NCR chess players’ charge by winning two gold medals in the secondary boys’ division.

Samantila, 15, defended his individual blitz title after defeating Southern Tagalog’s Artrino Paul Fortin via Buccholz tie-breaker, 27.5-26.5. Fortin finished second while Soccsksargen’s Andre Miguel Jorgio with a five-point output finished third.

The NCR bagged the overall team title with 10.5 points. SOCCSKSARGEN and Ilocos Region finished second and third, respectively.

In the women’s side, Southern Tagalog’s Marie Antoinette San Diego reigned supreme in the individual blitz with a 6.5-point output while NCR’s Ynna Sophia Canape and Western Visayas’ Natori Biazza Diaz, both garnering 5.5 points finished second and third respectively.

NCR bagged the team title with 10.5 while Western Visayas (9.5) and Southern Tagalog (8.5) took home the silver and bronze, respectively.
