The National Capital Region (NCR), as expected, dominated the Palarong Pambansa for the 12th straight year with its bets sweeping swimming, football and volleyball.
According to the Department of Education, NCR tallied a total of 104 gold medals, 57 silver medals and 48 bronze medals in this year’s edition of Palaro in Legazpi Albay. An improvement of their 98 gold, 67 silver and 71 bronze output when they’ve won last year’s edition of the event in Davao Del Norte.
NCR beat Central Visayas 3-1 in secondary football. It also defeated Calabarzon region 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 25-21 in girls’ volleyball before taking the boys’ volleyball trophy with a 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 25-21 win over Western Visayas.
Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon regions) finished second with 40 gold, 43 silver and 59 bronze medals. Western Visayas finished third with 35 gold, 35 silver 39 bronze medals. Central Visayas finished fourth with a 29-31-29 medal tally, Northern Mindanao fifth with 25-24-36 and Negros Island Region sixth with 21-28-39.
Calabarzon retained the boys’ secondary basketball crown by beating Central Luzon 92-72 in the finals via a third quarter rally led by Evan Nelle and Sam Abu Hijleh. NCR finished third by routing Central Visayas, 106-80.
Calabarzon also bagged the gold medal in elementary basketball after beating NCR in the finals, 74-59.
Last year’s most bemedaled swimmer Maurice Sacho Ilustre of NCR conquered eight of the 12 events at the Bicol University-Albay Sports and Tourism Complex. NCR’s medal tally in swimming is 27-22-16.
Central Visayas ruled the girls’ softball while Negros Island dominated the table tennis boys’ team event. NCR won the table tennis girls’ team event.
Western Visayas ruled the arnis elementary boys’ event, while Northern Mindanao region won the elementary girls’ arnis division.
