• Negros Occidental eyeing more medals in 2015 WVRAA


    BACOLOD CITY: Negros Occidental athletes hope to win more medals in the coming 2015 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meet in Aklan on the second week of February.

    Top elementary and high school athletes start their training early this month at Panaad Park and Sports Complex for athletics and other venues for the remaining events.

    Negros Occidental athletes will defend the gold medals they won in Antique last year, hoping to emerge as the province with the most number of gold medals in the regional meet.

    Athletes from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental and host Aklan will vie for medals in the week-long sports competition.

    The winners will represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa to be hosted by Tagum City, Davao Del Norte in May.

    Sports event to be contested include arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, chess, football, gymnastics, sipa, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and volleyball.

    The high school athletes will have the same events with the addition of boxing and archery while wushu, billiards, wrestling and futsal will be played as demonstration sports.

    Special events will feature athletics and goal ball for the visually impaired, bocce/boccia, swimming, and athletics for the 15 years old and below and 16 to 25 years old special athletes who are intellectually disabled, and athletics and swimming for the orthopedically handicapped.

    Medal system will be used to determine the winners.

    No overall champion will be declared but only in every event, as stated in the Department of Education Regional Memorandum No. 126 series of 2014.
