• Negros PNP braces for NPA attacks

BACOLOD CITY: The Philippine National Police across the Negros Island Region (NIR) has been placed on full alert status on the heels of the Sunday raid by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Maasin municipal police station in Iloilo.

Chief Supt. Edmond Gonzales, Police Regional Office-18 director, issued the directive to both Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental provincial police offices to implement “target hardening measures.

About 40 NPA rebels on Sunday took several high-powered firearms and handcuffed five policemen at the station. They also used a police patrol car in their escape and later abandoned it.

Gonzales said there should be timely intelligence gathering as he advised local police units to “closely monitor coastal areas facing Panay island.”

Meanwhile, Senior Supt. Rodolfo Castil, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, instructed all police chiefs and commanders of public safety forces to “always consider that everyday might be a tactical offensive by the enemy.”
