Negros rebel leader collared in military checkpoint


A ranking leader of the com-munist New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested by joint elements of the military and the police in the province of Negros Oriental.

Capt. Cresencio Gargar, public information officer, 302 Infantry Brigade, Third Infantry Divi-sion, identified the rebel as Nilda Bertulano, alias Frea.

Frea was arrested in a check-point at crossing Tamisu, Bais City by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court of Cadiz City for rebellion and murder.

Bertulano is the secretary of Provincial White Area Committee-Negros Oriental and is in charge of facilitating the logistical and fi-nancial requirement of the under-ground movement in Negros Orien-tal and Central Negros Occidental.

Military record also showed that Bertulano is also the commanding officer of Front Operational Command of Larangang Guerilla 1, Central Negros Front, Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros (LG1, CNF, KR-N) and directly participated in the armed conflict against the Army troops in Central Negros.

In a related development, troops from the 61st Infantry (Hunter) Battalion, Third ID, also figured in an encounter with red fighters at the boundary of Barangay Nayawan and Barangay Tacayan, Tapaz, Capiz.

Maj. Ray Tiongson, chief, Public Affairs Office, Third ID, said the troops were conducting peace and security patrol to check on the reported presence of lawless armed elements when fired upon by some 40 rebels.
