Filipinos on the Internet had mixed reactions over the disappointing loss of the Philippines’ representative to the 63rd Miss Universe, MJ Lastimosa. Though an early favorite, the North Cotabato native only made it as far as the coronation night’s Top 10.
Held on Sunday evening (Monday morning in the Philippines) at Doral, Miami in USA, the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant crowned Miss Colombia Pauline Vega as 2014 Miss Universe.
Some said Lastimosa did not make it to the top five because of her evening gown.
“#MissPhilippines gown is the main reason why we are not on this year Top 5” Mark Baquiran, celebrity hairstylist for L’Oreal Professional, commented on Twitter.
Ironically, MJ’s white sequined gown with a mermaid tail and crystal and sheen details was designed by Colombian Alfredo Barazza.
User @just_getREAL posted, “MissPhilippines’ gown was made by a Columbian designer. And Miss Columbia won MissUniverse!
#LagotKaAraneta”. The same sentiment was shared by @raissapuno: “Coincidence? Stella Cruz Araneta of BB. Pilipinas, Alfredo Barazza (MJ Lastimosa’s gown designer) and the new Miss U are all COLOMBIAN.”
And even though some Filipino designers made last minute alterations to Lastimosa’s gown, as reported by Yahoo! Philippines their efforts failed to raise the number’s wow factor.
Netizens therefore insisted that a Filipino designer should design Miss Philippines’ evening gown in 2016. Celebrity host, blogger and Internet icon Bianca Gonzales was one of them. She (@iamsuperbianca) tweeted, “Next year Pinoy designer na ang gown please.”
Nevertheless, majority of Filipinos online still expressed support for Lastimosa with the nationwide trending hashtag “#MJforMissUniverse.”
Twitter user Janine Puerto said, “MJ, you did your best. Its all the judges fault, they didn’t notice how deserving you are.
#MJForMsUniverse; while Larry James Arenga, said, “Hey, the fact that MJ reached the top 10 is an achievement. But I still think she should win. #MJForMsUniverse.”
Lastimosa, after the pageant, posted her photo during the swimsuit competition where she scored top marks on her Instagram account. The caption read, “So proud to be a Filipino! Man, can’t express how grateful I am to everyone! I’m filled with love right now! Love you all! Godbless us! Mabuhay!”
Miss USA Nia Sanchez was crowned 1st runner-up; Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha, 2nd runnerup; and Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen, 3rd runner-up.
